Susan Kilrain is a native of Augusta, GA. She graduated with a master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. After working for Lockheed Corporation for three years, Susan joined the Navy. She was commissioned in 1985 and went on to earn her wings in 1987. She is a graduate of Naval Test Pilot School and has flown over 30 different types of aircraft. She was selected by NASA for astronaut training in 1995 and flew as pilot of the Space Shuttle Columbia during STS-83 and STS-94, both in 1997. CDR Kilrain worked in Mission Control during the launches and landings for many space shuttle missions. She also worked at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC in the offices of Safety and Legislative Affairs. Kilrain left NASA in 2003 and retired from the Navy in 2005. She was a board member for Georgia Institute of Technology. She is a consultant and motivational speaker, specializing in encouraging young women to excel in STEM careers.
