US truckload spot rates dip, but volumes remain strong
The US spot truckload market decelerated last week, but it was barely a tap on the brakes. The average US dry van spot rate remained above $2 a gallon for the second week, and flatbed and refrigerated spot rates remained well above the norm for mid-October, DAT Solutions said. That is a sign the US economic expansion continues to gather steam and freight heading into the fourth quarter, as retailers move goods from warehouses to stores and consumers. Capacity “loosened” only in comparison with the previous week, and load-to-truck ratios remained high across the country, hitting at least 5.5 loads per truck in 25 states.
