James J. Martell has over 40 years of transportation and logistics industry serving in senior executive, Board of Director, and strategic investor roles. His background provides deep insight and perspective on areas including operations, M&A, and capital allocation.
Mr. Martell began his career as a manager at UPS in 1976. He later served in senior management roles at FedEx before founding UTI Worldwide in 1995. Mr. Martell spent six years as CEO of SmartMail Services, before selling the business to DHL in 2005. He then became Chairman and CEO of Express 1, the predecessor company to XPO Logistics, and served as a board member of XPO as it acquired and integrated 17 acquisitions totaling $7B over 5 years. Mr. Martell retired from the XPO board in 2016.
Mr. Martell has extensive experience with disruptive companies in the transportation space, including six venture companies where he served as Chairman. He currently is a Director and sits on the Governance committee of Mobile Mini, a NASDAQ listed $2B provider of portable storage solutions. Mr. Martell also serves as a Director for Transplace, a transportation management and logistics solutions business with over $9B of freight-under-management.
