Posted - January 30, 2019

Are you ready for some football? This weekend, the Patriots and Rams are facing off in the Super Bowl and many are weighing in with predictions and placing bets on who will come out victorious. Likewise, this week’s TIP List features some sure winners in logistics and supply chain news, including updates on trucking regulations and the Truck Tonnage Index increase in 2018.

  • U.S. Regulators Weigh Truck HOS Changes: As the era of the ELD enters its second year, U.S. regulators are focusing their attention on the HOS those ELDs are designed to monitor. They are mulling proposed adjustments to the HOS rules and may be pressed by the industry to go even further and make broader changes to help give truck drivers greater control at the wheel.
  • ATA Truck Tonnage Index Increased 6.6% in 2018: American Trucking Associations‘ advanced seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index increased 6.6% in all of 2018 – the largest annual gain since 1998 (10.1%) and significantly better than the 3.8% increase in 2017.
  • U.S. Rail Traffic Climbed in Week 3: U.S. rail traffic continued to trend in railroads’ favor during the week ending Jan. 19, with a 6.9% increase in carloads and intermodal units compared with year-ago volume, according to AAR data.
  • Truckers see Momentum Slowing Heading into 2019: Trucking companies face a battle in 2019 as the freight boom that delivered record profits for carriers over the past year begins to slow. Fleets extracted double-digit rate increases from shippers in 2018, as demand surged on strong economic growth forcing companies to scramble to book transportation in tight networks.
  • Infrastructure Projects May Start Feeling the Bite of Government Shutdown: State highway groups say the partial federal government shutdown could delay the start of new highway, bridge and other infrastructure projects across the U.S. if the budget impasse in Washington goes on much longer.

What supply chain trends are you game planning for this week?
