Meet Us in Dallas: RILA Retail Supply Chain Conference 2016

By: Matthew Menner, Senior Vice President of Strategic Account Management, Transplace

There are a number of reasons that I’m looking forward to both attending and speaking at RILA’s Retail Supply Chain Conference this week in Dallas, Texas (February 28 – March 2). RILA is a great place for diverse retail supply chain professionals to gather, exchange ideas and discuss all things logistics. It’s also one of the most focused industry events that I’ve attended — honing in on retail industry logistics and supply chain matters.

I am also excited to be moderating a panel today entitled Keeping Score: Carrier, Customers and Shippers of Choice. In this panel, we’ll discuss how the balance of power has shifted from shipper to carrier – since, for the first time in many shipper’s careers, the new norm is a relationship defined by carrier needs and requirements. This change in the shipper-carrier relationship has put new meaning and emphasis on the term “Shipper of Choice.”

As many in the industry may know, countless carriers are now using scorecards to rate their customers across multiple dimensions as a means to evaluate both new business opportunities and existing customer relationships. Carriers are scoring shippers on a number of factors, including:

  • Financial attractiveness
  • Fair accessorials
  • Profile of freight
  • Shipper treatment of carrier
  • Increased opportunities

Better scoring customers may receive access to capacity, preferred pricing and management attention. By focusing on key drivers of profitability and efficiency for the carrier, shippers can assist in creating a more fluid network and increasing total available capacity. And shippers want to understand specific ways and clear “next steps” in how they can help carriers become more efficient, especially in light of the ongoing driver shortage. In order to be a “Shipper of Choice” to carriers, shippers need to understand what drives carrier efficiency, what’s going to make the driver more efficient and ultimately, what’s going to make the overall network more efficient.

I think this panel will be a great opportunity to open up a discussion and share some valuable insight on an important topic. Participating with me on this panel and sharing their expertise are a number of industry leaders including:

  • Ryan Hanson, Senior Director, Domestic Transportation, Target
  • Bryan Ward, Senior Director, Transportation, The Home Depot
  • Spencer Frazier, Senior Vice President, Sales, J.B. Hunt
  • Craig Callahan, Senior Vice President, Sales, Werner Enterprises

Lastly, I’ll be checking out this year’s keynote speakers, Brian Cornell, CEO of Target Corporation and Mike Abrashoff, Former Commander of the USS Benfold. You can find the full schedule of speakers here.
