US shippers racing to lock down truck rates

US shippers eager to avoid rate hikes in the latter part of the year are sitting down with trucking providers to talk pricing and putting business up for bid as they try to protect savings gained in last year’s weak freight market, when their pricing muscle was mighty.

In the first quarter, “we thought it would calm down, but we’re just swamped with bids,” Ben Cubitt, senior vice president of engineering & strategic carrier management at Transplace, said. That’s after the Dallas-based logistics company handled a record number of freight bids for shippers across all transport modes in 2016.
